Terhardt, E. (1977). The two-component theory of musical consonance. In: Psychophysics and Physiology of Hearing (Evans, E.F., Wilson, J.P., eds.), Academic, London, 381-390

The paper briefly describes the concept of musical consonance and reports the results of experiments on perception of roughness and virtual bass notes. The results demonstrate the coincidence between roughness and sensory dissonance and the real existence of Rameau's "basse fondamentale".
